Kari, or as her parents named her, "Ling" was born in Sifang, an urban district of Qingdao, China. She has a twin brother, Kuan, who still resides in China to help their father with the family business.
Both Kari and Kuan were sent to arts school at the age of 3 and both were taught to play the piano and violin. Kari was also taught ballet and Kuan was taught painting. Along with those studies, other instructions in mathematics, history, and languages, including, Japanese, English, Vulcan, Klingon, Bajoran and Trill.
After finishing their studies, both brother and sister went their seperate ways. Kuan choosing a life back home and Kari suprising everyone by joining SFMC.
